The Bank of Spain reported that there are 27 million homes in the country, of which only 13.3% are rented. The rest, representing about four million homes, are empty or unoccupied. However, most are in poor condition or in undesirable areas to live.
The result is a shortage of about 600,000 homes that would take years to build, especially considering that we are still suffering the consequences of the pandemic slowdown.
Currently, Barcelona is the most expensive city to rent a home, followed by Madrid, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Cádiz. Regarding the sale of used homes, Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma have once again reached record highs in price per square meter.
